I’m sorry to break it to you, but starting a health blog isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re going to depend on Google to drive traffic. Here is why…
Most people want to ensure that any health advice they’re getting is from a qualified professional. You know, this is about someone’s life. So, the first challenge of starting a health blog is how to establish credibility (I address how to solve this in this article).
Second, before deciding how to rank your website, Google takes into account a variety of authority signals, as they give particular weight to blogs that discuss money and wellness. To succeed, then, all of this comes down to becoming an authority in the health sector.
But whether or not you have this authority, if you have the will and the dedication, this article will explore in detail everything you need to succeed as a health blogger. Let’s get started.
What Sets Health Blogs Apart from Other Types of Blogs?
Health blogs have gained significant popularity in recent years as more and more people seek information and resources to improve their well-being. But what makes a health blog stand out from other types of blogs? Let's explore some key factors that set health blogs apart.
Expertise and Credibility
One of the distinguishing features of health blogs is the expertise and credibility they offer. Unlike generic lifestyle blogs, health blogs are typically created and curated by individuals who have in-depth knowledge and experience in the field of health and wellness. They often have professional backgrounds, such as certified nutritionists, fitness trainers, doctors, or researchers, which lends them a higher level of authority and reliability.
Focus on Health and Wellness Topics
Unlike general blogs that cover a broad spectrum of topics, health blogs have a distinct and concentrated niche: health and wellness. Within this specialized realm, they delve deep into a multitude of facets that collectively contribute to a person's overall well-being. These encompass areas such as nutrition, physical fitness, mental health, and holistic practices, just to name a few.
The beauty of health blogs lies in their ability to offer a comprehensive and tailored approach to promoting and enhancing well-being. By dedicating their content to this specific domain, they can address the unique needs and interests of their audience. This focused approach enables readers to access a wealth of valuable information and resources that are directly relevant to their health-related concerns and goals.
Science-backed and Evidence-based Information
Health blogs strive to provide accurate and reliable information by basing their content on scientific research and evidence. They aim to debunk myths and misconceptions, relying on trustworthy sources and citing studies to support their claims. This commitment to scientific rigor sets health blogs apart, ensuring that readers receive reliable and up-to-date information to guide their health-related choices.
In other words, you can’t just go into health blogging because you know how to write. Can you conduct the rigorous research needed? Can you find sources and verify them? Can you read scientific research papers? These are some of the prerequisites.
Practical Tips and Actionable Advice
Another characteristic that distinguishes health blogs is their emphasis on practical tips and actionable advice. Rather than simply discussing abstract concepts, these blogs provide readers with tangible steps and strategies to improve their health. Whether it's sharing healthy recipes, workout routines, stress management techniques, or self-care practices, health blogs empower readers to take control of their well-being and implement positive changes in their lives.
Step-by-step Guide on How to Start a Health Blog
The above section is to help you determine if you really want to become a health blogger. If that decision has been made, congratulations. The following is a step-by-step guide on how to start and launch a health blog.
Choose a Niche for Your Health Blog
When starting a health blog, one of the first steps is to choose a niche that you are passionate about and that aligns with your expertise. This ensures that you are able to provide valuable and trustworthy information to your readers. In this section, we will explore the different aspects of choosing a niche for your health blog.
Research Popular Health Topics
To begin with, it is important to research popular health topics that are in demand and have a significant following. This will help you identify areas where people are seeking information and are interested in learning more. Conducting keyword research and analyzing search trends can provide insights into the topics that are currently popular and have the potential to attract a larger audience.
Identify Your Expertise and Passion
When choosing a niche for your health blog, it is crucial to consider your own expertise and passion. Think about the areas in which you have deep knowledge or professional experience. This will not only help you create content that is accurate and reliable but also allow you to write with confidence and authority. It's important to choose a niche that you genuinely enjoy and are passionate about, as this will keep you motivated to consistently produce high-quality content.
Types of Health and Wellness Blogging
Health and wellness blogging can take various forms, depending on the focus of your niche and the type of content you want to create. Some common types of health and wellness blogging include:
- Educational Blogs: These types of blogs focus on providing informative and educational content about specific health topics. They aim to help readers understand complex concepts, explain medical conditions, or provide guidance on lifestyle changes.
- Personal Journey Blogs: These blogs share personal experiences and stories related to health and wellness. They often provide insights into overcoming challenges, managing specific health conditions, or achieving personal health goals.
- Recipe and Nutrition Blogs: These blogs focus on providing healthy recipes, meal plans, and nutrition tips. They cater to readers who are interested in maintaining a balanced diet or have specific dietary needs.
- Fitness and Exercise Blogs: Fitness and exercise blogs focus on providing workout routines, exercise tips, and advice on maintaining an active lifestyle. They often include demonstrations and step-by-step instructions to help readers achieve their fitness goals.
Set Up Your Health Blog
With your niche decided, the next step is to find an outlet for the wealth of information you want to provide to your audience, namely: setting up a blog. In this section, I will guide you through the process of choosing a domain name, selecting a web hosting provider, and installing a content management system (CMS).
Choose a Domain Name
One of the first decisions you need to make when starting a health blog is choosing your domain name. Most bloggers would say your domain name should reflect the purpose and focus of your blog, but I assure you this is an outdated piece of advice. What’s most important is to ensure you choose a name that’s memorable. Here are some tips to help you select an effective domain name:
- Relevancy: Choose a domain name that clearly indicates your blog is related to health-if you can. But this is not a must.
- Be unique: Don't merely copy others based on what's trending in the industry. Stand out by picking a domain name that's memorable.
- Keep it short and simple: Avoid long and complicated domain names that are hard to remember and type. Shorter domain names are easier for your audience to recall.
There are several domain name registrars out there from whom you can purchase. Popular ones include GoDaddy, NameCheap, Bluehost, and Hostinger. These registrars are almost as old as the Internet itself.
Once you enter your desired domain name into the domain registrar, it will browse the internet to see if the name has already been taken. If it’s already been chosen by someone else, it would tell you it’s not available.
Now, it may also suggest that you use another TLD (top-level domain) other than dot com. But I want to advise you to stick to .com by refining your choice of domain name until one is available. Other TLDs, such as .org, .net, etc., aren’t as memorable.
See an example here:
Also, I always advise that you should buy your domain name from your host provider for easy setup of your blog. So, wait till the next section to see my personal recommendation on this.
Select a Web Hosting Provider
Once you have chosen a domain name, the next step is to select a web hosting provider. Web hosting makes your blog accessible on the internet. Here's what to consider when choosing a web hosting provider::
- Reliability and Uptime: Your hosting provider should have a track record of uptime so your website doesn't disappear from the Internet every now and then.
- Speed and Performance: Opt for a hosting provider with fast loading times to provide a seamless user experience. This will help your SEO and make your audience happy.
- Scalability: Consider your blog's potential growth and choose a hosting provider that offers scalable options, allowing you to upgrade resources as your blog expands.
- Customer Support: Opt for a provider known for excellent customer support to address any technical issues promptly. And I can't stress this enough.
But I don’t expect you to know how to check for these things yet. And that’s why I’d recommend Bluehost.
Yes, I’ve been using Bluehost for years, and they've hardly had any downtime. They have good customer care, which, I must say, isn’t as awesome as it used to be in the past. But they aren’t bad bad.
Once you’re on their website, just follow the prompts to the end.
Install a Content Management System (CMS)
Installing a content management system (CMS) is crucial for managing and publishing your blog content efficiently. The CMS allows you to create and organize your blog posts, apply themes, and customize the overall look and feel of your blog. One of the most popular CMS options for bloggers is WordPress. But this may be confusing because there is WordPress.com and there is WordPress.org.
WordPress.org is the most popular CMS in the world, and it’s totally free. And it’s the one you’re looking for.
Here's how to install WordPress:
Here's how to install WordPress:
- Sign up with a web hosting provider that offers a one-click WordPress installation feature. Examples are Bluehost, Hostinger, or MochaHost.
- You will see a control panel on your screen once you sign in. Locate the "WordPress" or "Website" section.
- Click on the WordPress installation option and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.
- Once installed, go to www.yourblogdomain.com/wp-admin. to access your WordPress dashboard.
By following these steps, you can get your health blog up and running with ease. Remember, choosing a domain name that reflects your blog's focus, selecting a reliable web hosting provider, and installing a user-friendly CMS are key factors in setting a strong foundation for your health blog.
Create Engaging and Informative Content
To start a successful health blog, it is crucial to create engaging and informative content that provides your audience with valuable insights. In this section, we will explore the key steps to developing high-quality content for your health blog.
Develop a Content Strategy
Before you start writing blog posts, it's essential to have a well-defined content strategy in place. This includes mapping out your target audience, understanding their pain points, and determining what you want your blog to achieve.
To develop an effective content strategy:
- Define your target audience: Some types of audience you may want your health blog to reach are: health-conscious individuals, fitness enthusiasts, or those seeking medical advice.
- Research popular topics: Identify the trending health-related topics or common questions your target audience is searching for. You can follow health experts on social media and join health groups and forums to see what people are discussing.
- Set clear goals: Determine what you want to achieve with your blog, whether it's to educate, inspire, or promote a particular product or service.
Conduct Thorough Research
Once you have a content strategy in place, conducting thorough research is essential to providing accurate and up-to-date information to your readers. Reliable information helps establish your credibility and builds trust with your audience.
Here are some tips for conducting research:
- Use trusted sources: Rely on reputable websites, academic journals, medical literature, and expert opinions to gather information for your blog posts.
- Fact-check your content: Double-check all the facts, claims, and statistics you include in your articles to ensure accuracy.
- Stay updated: Continuously follow the latest developments in the health industry to provide the most relevant and current information to your readers.
Find Real Health Experts and Medical Practitioners
To add credibility to your blog, it is essential to collaborate with real health experts and medical practitioners. Their knowledge and expertise will enrich your content and provide valuable insights for your audience.
Also, this will boost your chances of ranking highly on Google, as Google pays extra attention to the health industry. This is part of their drive to keep their users safe and ensure they aren’t getting advice that might cost them their health or their lives. Learn more about that here.
Consider the following when looking for experts and practitioners:
- Seek professional advice: Reach out to doctors, nutritionists, fitness trainers, psychologists, or other health professionals to contribute as guest writers or consultants.
- Conduct interviews: Arrange interviews with experts to gather firsthand information and exclusive insights for your blog posts.
- Attribute sources: Always give credit to the experts and practitioners you collaborate with, including their credentials and affiliations.
Write Clear and Concise Articles
When creating content for your health blog, it is important to write in a clear and concise manner. Use simple language to ensure that your content is easily understandable by readers of all backgrounds. Avoid using complex medical terminology unless you provide clear explanations.
To enhance the accessibility and readability of your content, consider these effective strategies:
- Break down complex topics: Simplify intricate subjects by breaking them down into smaller, easy-to-understand sections.
- Utilize headings and subheadings: Employ well-structured headings and subheadings to organize your content, facilitating reader navigation and comprehension of key points.
- Maintain concise paragraphs: Opt for shorter paragraphs to not only improve readability but also sustain reader engagement throughout your content..
Include Relevant Images and Visuals
Incorporating relevant images and visuals can greatly enhance the visual appeal and usability of your health blog. Images not only make your content more engaging but also aid in conveying complex information in a digestible manner.
Consider the following tips when selecting images and visuals:
- Choose high-quality images: Use appealing and high-resolution images that are relevant to the topic of your blog post.
- Include infographics and diagrams: Utilize visual representations such as infographics or diagrams to simplify complex ideas and data.
- Optimize images for SEO: Compress and properly label your images using alt text with relevant keywords to improve search engine visibility.
By following these guidelines, you will be able to create captivating and informative content for your health blog that effectively communicates with your target audience and establishes your authority in the field.
Optimize Your Health Blog for SEO
Google is an endless sea of audience, if you know how to use it well.
To secure the visibility your health blog merits, it's essential to fine-tune it for search engines. By deploying impactful SEO techniques, you can increase your website's ranking on search engine results pages and draw in a greater flow of organic traffic. In the forthcoming section, we will delve into various pivotal measures to enhance your health blog's SEO performance.
Perform Keyword Research
Prior to embarking on your health blog content creation journey, it's imperative to conduct comprehensive keyword research. Keywords are the words or phrases that individuals use when seeking information relevant to your blog's subject matter. By incorporating relevant keywords into your content, you can create an alignment between what you have in mind and what exactly your audience is searching for.
To streamline this process, you can use tools such as Ubersuggest, SEMrush, or Ahrefs. These tools empower you to pinpoint high-search-volume, low-competition keywords, thereby optimizing your potential for favorable search engine rankings. Once you've curated a list of target keywords, strategically infuse them throughout your blog posts, encompassing headings, subheadings, and body paragraphs.

Write SEO-friendly Titles and Meta Descriptions
Craft compelling and SEO-friendly titles and meta descriptions for your health blog posts. These elements serve as the first impression for potential visitors when they see your blog in search engine results. Your titles should be concise, descriptive, and include relevant keywords. Aim to create titles that are both attention-grabbing for readers and optimized for search engines.
Similarly, meta descriptions provide a brief summary of your blog post's content. They should accurately describe what readers can expect from your article, enticing them to click through. Include relevant keywords in your meta descriptions while ensuring they remain engaging and informative.
Optimize Your Content with Appropriate Keywords
As mentioned earlier, incorporating relevant keywords into your content is crucial for SEO. However, it's important to do this naturally and avoid keyword stuffing, which can negatively impact your blog's ranking. Focus on creating high-quality, informative content that genuinely answers the questions and concerns of your target audience.
Include keywords in a way that flows naturally within your sentences and paragraphs. Aim for a keyword density of around 1-2% to maintain a good balance. Additionally, consider using long-tail keywords, which are more specific phrases that have less competition but can attract highly targeted traffic.
An example of long-tail keywords is this blog post titled “How to Start a Health Blog.” This term is easier to rank for because it’s not as broad as “How to Start a Blog.” By bidding on the former, you make sure that only the people who are searching for information on health blogging can find you.
On the other hand, if I target something as broad as the latter, no one will find me because there is too much competition going on for that phrase.
Use Internal and External Links
Linking plays a significant role in SEO optimization. But there are two types of links:
- Internal links, which are links within your web pages to another
- External links, also known as backlinks, are the links you get from other relevant websites pointing back to your pages. Even though Google has begun to deny it in the last few months, it’s one of the top three ranking signals.
Internal links connect one page of your blog to another, helping search engine crawlers navigate your site and discover more of your content. Additionally, they keep visitors engaged by leading them to related posts or relevant information within your blog. Ensure that your internal links are relevant and provide value to your readers.
External links, on the other hand, direct visitors to reputable sources outside of your blog. These links add credibility to your content and show search engines that you've done your research and are providing valuable information. When adding external links, choose reliable and authoritative sources that align with your blog's topic.
Distribute Your Content
While SEO is very important, don’t sleep on content distribution. Promote your posts on social media platforms, participate in communities and forums, and collaborate with industry influencers if you can.
All of these will increase your visibility and drive awareness for your blog.
Also, ensure that your blog posts are shareable by adding social media buttons for easy sharing.
Monetize Your Health Blog
With your blog now properly set up and you are beginning to have an audience, let's talk about how you can monetize your blog. If you already have an audience, this isn't too hard. And there are several ways to do this including: Display Ads on Your Blog, Join Affiliate Programs, and Create and Sell Digital Products or Courses.
Display Ads on Your Blog
Display advertising is one of the most popular ways to monetize your health blog. Each time someone clicks on an ads or views it, you earn revenue. Now this isn’t as sexy as many people imagine.
It’s a meager sum, but when you have a large audience, it adds up to something substantial. I know a number of bloggers who have made a fortune from display ads.
Here's how you can get started:
- Sign up with an ad network: Research and choose a reputable ad network that aligns with your blog's niche and target audience. Some popular options include Google AdSense, Media.net, and AdThrive.
Join Affiliate Programs
Affiliate marketing is a mutually beneficial strategy where you promote products or services on your health blog and earn a commission for every referred sale. It’s my personal preference among all the monetization techniques.
Here's how you can effectively leverage affiliate programs:
- Choose relevant affiliate products: Select products or services that align with your blog's niche and are valuable to your audience. For example, if your blog focuses on fitness, you could promote workout equipment, supplements, or online fitness programs.
- Research and join affiliate programs: Look for reputable affiliate networks or individual affiliate programs related to your niche. Some popular affiliate networks include Amazon Associates, ShareASale, and Commission Junction.
- Create compelling content and affiliate links: Craft genuine and informative blog posts that highlight the benefits of the affiliate products. Incorporate your unique affiliate links within the content, ensuring they blend seamlessly without appearing overly promotional.
Create and Sell Digital Products or Courses
Creating and selling your own digital products or courses is another excellent way to monetize your expertise and provide value directly to your audience. Here's how you can get started:
- Identify your audience's needs: What kind of digital products will your audience need, and what are they looking for in it? Suppose there is a specific type of exercise they need to learn, you can create a video instruction to guide them on how to do it correctly.
- Create high-quality educational content: The quality of your content in terms of the information it gives, its structure, and visual appeal is non-negotiable. They might need what you have to offer badly, but don’t let them struggle to get it when they’d already paid.
- Promote your products: Utilize social media, email marketing, and collaborations with other health bloggers to promote your digital products or courses. Offer special discounts or bonuses to incentivize your audience to make a purchase.
